Browse files on a volume

List, preview, download, upload, rename and delete files on a container instance's persistent volumes from the Files tab.

Requires: containerinstance/readFiles

The Files tab shows the persistent volumes of the instance's components. It needs containerinstance/readFiles to open, and containerinstance/writeFiles to change anything. No reader role has either: reaching a volume goes through the pod, and is as powerful as a terminal — see Permissions.

Ephemeral and files volumes are not shown here: an ephemeral volume disappears with its pod, and the content of a files volume is part of the instance's configuration — see Add volumes and files.

Open a volume

  1. On the instance page, open the Files tab. The tab is shown only to people who can read files.
  2. When several components have a persistent volume, choose the Component.
  3. Open folders by name and go back with the path above the list. Refresh reads the folder again.

The files are reached through a helper container the platform adds to every pod with a persistent volume. It keeps working while the component's own container crash-loops, but it needs a pod: a stopped component's files cannot be browsed. A folder with more files than one page can show asks you to open a subfolder instead.

Read files

  • Preview, in a file's menu, shows a text file in the page. A file that is not text, or the part of a large file beyond what the preview shows, has to be downloaded.
  • Download saves a file. For a folder the menu offers Download as .tar, which saves the folder with everything in it.

Change files

With containerinstance/writeFiles:

  • Upload a file into the open folder, or drop files on the list. A folder has to be uploaded one file at a time. One upload can be at most 512 MiB.
  • New folder creates a folder.
  • Rename renames a file or folder.
  • Delete deletes a file, or a folder with everything in it. It cannot be undone.

Whether the application notices a changed file depends on the application. Many read their files only when they start; for those, Re-deploy the component afterwards — see Re-deploy one component.

What is recorded

Every download, upload, new folder, rename and delete is recorded in the instance's Activity tab, with the component, the path and who did it. Opening folders is not recorded.
