Stackship platform
What Stackship is, the concepts everything else builds on — boundaries, resource groups, resources and roles — and where to start.
Stackship is a self-hosted platform for running applications, functions, databases and the
services around them on Kubernetes. You work with it in the portal at https://portal.example.com,
with the stsh CLI, or through its API at https://api.example.com — all three with the same
permissions.
Concepts
| Concept | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Boundary | The top-level scope. Resources, members and permissions all belong to one boundary |
| Tenant | The people who sign in to work in a boundary, and how they sign in. Every boundary starts as a tenant of its own |
| Resource group | A container for related resources inside a boundary |
| Resource | An app, static web app, container instance, function, job, database, storage account, vault or other managed service |
| Cluster | A Kubernetes cluster the platform places resources on. Platform administrators register clusters and make boundaries available on them |
| Role | A named set of permissions, assigned to a person, group, service account or managed identity on a boundary, a resource group or a single resource |
| Blueprint | A reusable template that deploys a set of resources together |
How the pieces fit
- Pick a boundary — the switcher at the top of the portal's sidebar.
- Create or choose a resource group in it.
- Create resources in the resource group.
- Grant roles on the boundary, on a resource group or on a single resource to decide who can read, change or operate what. A role granted higher up applies to everything below it.
What the platform manages
- Boundaries and resource groups
- Applications with deployment slots, static web apps, container instances, jobs and functions
- PostgreSQL, SQL Server, Qdrant vector databases and Valkey key-value stores
- S3-compatible storage
- Secret vaults
- A container registry
- Blueprints
- Roles, role assignments and managed identities
- Monitoring, alerts and Sentinel analysis
- Platform upgrades and backups
Which of these your installation offers depends on the modules installed on it.
